Dominicalito, Playa Dominical

Dominical is located 30 minutes north of Las Villas de San Buenas. Playa Dominical is a small surfer’s town that prior to the Costanera Highway being completed in 2008 was the unofficial launching point to the Osa region of Costa Rica as it is 28 miles south of Quepos/Manuel National Park. Playa Domincal is world renown for its incredible surfing, beach side kiosks and a good variety of restaurants, bars and late night dancing. There is a Banco de Costa Rica (BCR) bank at the Playa Pacifica strip mall, located on the east side of the Costanera Highway.

The turn off from the Costanera Highway to Dominical is located approximately 50 meters past the Baru River bridge (as you head south). Turn west onto the gravel road and there will be a Delicias Coffee Shop on your right. Follow the road to the left to see the surf shops, restaurants, bars and novelty shops on Dominical’s “Main Street”. The road is still unpaved keeping the small town feel and local charm.

Surfing at Dominical

Surfing Dominical Costa RicaThe waves at the beach are very powerful and it is recommended that if you want to simply swim and enjoy the ocean to continue south to a beach with calmer waves. The Dominical Lifeguards are on duty every day and will advise you of the current conditions. If you are a surfer – welcome to paradise! The surfing is great! If you want to learn to surf there are several surfing schools found promoting their schools on the beach.

Land around Dominical is some of the most expensive in all of Costa Rica. Because of this, Dominical is a great place to enjoy a beer at Tortilla Flats (according to CNN a Top 50 Best Beach Bar in the World) and mingle with a millionaire or with a ‘surf bum’ = all will be treated equally.
